Hello, I’m Sian Leigh

Your holistic health coach switching the world from yang to yin

Let’s be honest. This whole health thing can be pretty overwhelming, with a side of yawn. Sure, there was that whole prancercise fad and avocado mousse is great, but choosing the right path for your body, mind and daily demands can be confusing, stressful and a bit dry, really.

While my Bachelor of Psychology, Certification in Nutrition and Holistic Health, yoga teacher training and retreat-running experience equip me with the knowledge and skills to support you through your health and wellness journey, it’s my experience as a human that makes The Health Shed so different.

My health story

CFS Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, parasites, eczema, sinus infections, migraines, insomnia, food allergies, two kids with their own set of health challenges and a hectic work schedule around the globe. Throw juggling the corporate world with running an import business, snowboarding, travel and a decent dose of partying into the mix, and it doesn’t take a health coach to guess what happened next.

My endless prescription of quick fix meds, fast-paced life, and get-on-with-it style came to a grinding halt in 2012. My doctors told me that CFS was an incurable auto-immune disease I’d just have to live with - so I took my health into my own hands. Little by little, I expanded my knowledge and grew to understand the connection between body and mind. I slowed down, began daily restorative yoga, learned to breathe properly and switched to a GAPS diet until gradually, I healed my gut, my head and my immune system.

Alongside the health challenges of my children, my journey to wellness inspired me not just to share my knowledge with the world, but to make it a simple, fun and enjoyable experience - god forbid. To meet you where you are, offer practical advice that doesn’t add more stress, learn the skills to stay on track and support you on your way to living the good life. Whatever that looks like.

My Case Studies

  • Elliot is London, born and bred, and came to me after 18 months of crippling chest pain. He had been to numerous doctors, specialists, chiropractors, osteopaths, masseurs, had had chest x-rays, MRI’s, CAT scans, blood and stool tests and had even changed his mattress 3 times.

He was on multiple pain killers and sleeping medication, but nothing stopped him from waking in the night with this crippling pain in his chest. He was in despair that he’d just have to ‘learn to live with it’ as he had been told by the last health professional he’d seen.

I did a full review of all his blood work and medical records for the past year, spent 90 minutes running through every facet of his life, his diet, his lifestyle, family history, work situation, home situation and noticed a pattern emerging connecting various factors to when the nights were unbearable. By looking at this ‘worst case scenario’ and speaking daily for a month we worked out that, along with other habits, his excessive caffeine intake combined with a diet high in inflammatory foods meant he had developed sleep apnea. When he stopped breathing in the night his ribcage seized and this meant that the intercostals then spasmed to cause the debilitating chest pain.

When we worked to gradually decrease the caffeine and eliminate inflammatory foods and introduced breathing exercises to practice in the day he started to have nights where he slept through. This combined with numerous supportive supplements helped him to undo the pattern his body had fallen into. When he deviated and increased the aforementioned triggers he found the pain returned. This breakthrough was life changing for Elliot, he realised that he had complete control of how his body functioned, even when he was asleep. He stopped taking pain relief and sleeping pills and is now pain free.

  • Zoe came to me having worn the label of ‘Chronic Fatigue Sufferer’ for 20 years. She was suffering from zero energy, brain fog, autoimmune issues, heavy, aching muscles, allergies, chronic hyperventilation and depression. After our initial consultation of 90 minutes I created a plan for us to work backwards addressing the most recent symptom first, knowing that the complete lack of energy and muscle pain would be the last symptoms to leave, given they had settled into Zoe’s cells for a very long time.

We also addressed the trauma Zoe suffered just before her symptoms began, helping her to understand she had been suffering from unaddressed PTSD for most of her life. I worked to help Zoe understand the effect of trauma on the body on a deep cellular level, and by breaking several patterns and using a variety of techniques (NLP, Yin yoga) we reprogrammed her to move out of the state of constant fight or flight she was sitting in. We also introduced a number of nervous system calming supplements to help her transition to sitting in her parasympathetic nervous system.

Zoe’s transformation was extremely inspiring and rewarding as she came to me bed bound and at the end of 9 months of working together she booked a trip to Africa with her entire family. She committed to pottery classes (commitment to activities is impossible with CFS), had clarity of thought, good energy, strength in her muscles and a deep understanding of the mind body connection.

  • Ben came to me with the autoimmune condition Psoriatic Arthritis. He also presented with Irritable Bowel symptoms which is very common when an autoimmune condition has been ‘diagnosed’ medically. He was taking rheumatological drugs, prednisone and anti inflammatories daily. He was in constant and serious pain across his neck, shoulders, elbows, hands and feet.

He had severe dandruff and very dry skin. He was very fatigued and ‘generally miserable’. He was very science based so it was important when we began healing him that he understood the exact science of what was occurring in his body, and why this auto immune condition had taken such a hold. I provided him with podcasts and science based literature after each session so he could continue to research himself and really start to believe in the healing power of his own body, given the right circumstances.

Over the period of 6 months we met every second week to establish both dietary & lifestyle changes and introduced supplements to remove inflammation in his body and heal and seal his gut. I enabled him to take control of his cooking and he started preparing easy, gut healing recipes for his whole family. He could not believe the changes and given his top two sports were surfing and cricket, sports he hadn’t been able to take part in due to the immobility in his shoulders, the real test came when he had to lift his arms and rotate them, and could, pain free.
